Title: 1 John 2:1-2
Post by: AmyS on January 08, 2009, 10:38:34 am
Good Morning Ladies... well... almost afternoon for me.  Here are my thoughts for today:

Interesting observation: at least 6 times in 1 John, he addresses the believers he was writing as "little children". (I noticed this when I read several other translations besides NIV)

I would assume that these letters were written to new believers (they were all pretty much new believers at that point anyway, weren't they?), challenging them to live a life pleasing to God.  It's like he's cheering them on, saying that they can, indeed, live without sin in their lives (as they abide in His Word) but also tells them that if they do sin not to give up.

Even though I've served God for many years, I think about how God has challenged me to rise early to spend time with Him and I still fall short.  It's easy to just throw up my hands and give up.  But as John reminds us, Jesus, our Advocate, is standing in the gap (in between our inadequacies/ failures and God) telling us to continue on in His grace and mercy... to accept the forgiveness that is in Him.  For he has already paid the price.  I am so thankful that His mercies are new EVERY morning.

Lamentations 3:22-24 (New King James Version)
22 Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed,
      Because His compassions fail not.
       23 They are new every morning;
      Great is Your faithfulness.
24 “ The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“ Therefore I hope in Him!”

I agree...I love the fact that John writes these things to help prevent sin in our lives.  I also love the fact that he is totally real and says that if we do sin, it is wonderful to know we have Jesus Christ as our advocate.  Christ died for ALL sin!  Thank you Lord for my salvation!

I think John also called his readers children, because he was so much older at the time of the writing and he saw himself as a spiritual mentor.  Good stuff!

I love the compassion and love he has for his fellow believers in calling them children. Just his mentorship to them shows his passion for the gospel and a desire for the early believers (and those to come) to not get discouraged. I wonder if he can relate? Even though he was with Christ, I can imagine how hard it was to sin right before the PHYSICAL eyes of Christ. I can imagine that he has been discouraged in his past. What he talks about reminds me of Romans 6-8 when Paul talks about us having victory over sin because we have the Holy Spirit. I feel like its the same...John is letting believers know that we do not HAVE to sin. We can overcome it....not by our power as Paul states in Romans, but in God's. And John knowing full well that we would sin, encourages us not to give up. Sometimes its so easy to say, "well, I've already screwed up....no point in going back." And that is the amazing thing about God's grace and forgiveness!

I love verse 2 and that John uses the word "propitiation." In the OT, the sacrifices of the animals only covered the sin for a period of time. Propitiation means "satisfactory payment." Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary states, "The sacrifice of Jesus' sinless life is so effective that it can supply forgiveness for the whole world. Christ's death is sufficient for all, but efficient only for those who believe in Christ." Christ death was the payment for all sin....and his death satisfied God the Father so that we may stand before Him and have a relationship with Him. AMEN!

I was thinking about what made Jesus' sacrifice so different yesterday but it didn't click to check the word. :D Duh! Thanks for sharing that!!!

Notes on 1 John 2008 Edition by Dr. Thomas L. Constable

The Greek word translate "Advocate" is parakleton that transliterated into English is "Paraclete." It means one who gets called to the side of another to help.

Jesus Christ did not just make satisfaction for our sins, though He did that. He is the satisfaction Himself. The Septuagint translators used the same Greek word translated "propitiation" here (hilasmos, satisfaction, cf. 4:10) to translate the "mercy seat" on the ark of the covenant. Jesus' body was the site where God placated His wrath against sin. Verses 1:5-2:2 all have Old Testament tabernacle connotations. Jesus' death not only expiated (cleansed) sins, but it satisfied God's wrath against sin.
